Major CBA figure poached

Commonwealth Bank’s chief product owner for open banking is moving on after 18 years at the bank

Gavin Leon is leaving CBA to join software company Atlassian, according to a report by itnews.com.au. Leon announced the move on LinkedIn and said he would be joining the software company in mid-March.

Both Atlassian and CBA declined to comment on the move.

“I’m privileged to have worked with so many incredible people who gave me a chance, really care about what they do and are excellent at their craft,” Leon wrote of his time at CBA. “Thank you for your friendship and everything you have taught me. I’m grateful for the fantastic opportunities to learn and grow working on meaningful initiatives that few companies in Australia can do.”

Leon was appointed chief product owner for open banking in January 2020. He called the launch of CBA’s first phase of open banking in July a “milestone” for the bank that advanced its technology strategy.

Leon started with CBA in 2002 as a service delivery manager. From there, he worked his way up to digital data and analytics executive manager before being named CPO for open banking, itnews.com.au reported.

CBA also recently lost Dario Nascimento, its lead engineer for a container-as-a-service platform, to CMC Markets, a UK broker company. The platform hosts critical workloads including open banking, itnews.com.au reported.
