Bringing in over a billion in settlements

MPA hears from the director of a brokerage that has topped the ten figure mark in settlements last financial year.

Zenik Finance Solution in Sydney Olympic Park, NSW is a booming brokerage with 30 brokers that brought in more than $1 billion in settlements between them last financial year and is set to grow its team even further in 2016.

“I’ve been in the finance broking business for 15 years and started off in the Wizard days with Mr Bouris,” says director Jason Li. “We joined Vow three years ago and now we are back under the same umbrella again. The Vow network is very good to be part of. Just like a family.”

Zenik recently won three awards at the 2015 Vow Awards in South Africa for Broker Partner of the Year- Deal Volume, Broker Partner of the Year- Settlement Volume and Broker Partner of the Year – over six people.

“We had a big night of achievement at the awards,” says Li. “But I always tell my team ‘after we celebrate, we are back to square one’. We need to continue to work hard again to achieve our goals for next year. We often work seven days a week on behalf of our customers and we will continue to work hard for them in the New Year,” he said.

Growing the team
Zenik has grown rapidly from a team five to 42 strong in recent years and just moved into a larger office space. This will allow the company to cater for 80 individuals across the broking and processing teams and expand their client base which Li says currently consists of 80% Chinese clients.

Li says he looks for new to industry and also those with experience when taking on new brokers.

“I interview them one by one, face to face - if they’re really interested in this job, we ask them to get their certificate first and then we get them onboard. Nearly ten brokers have their certificate already and very soon they will be joining our team.”

New brokers at Zenik have a training plan taking them from the first customer phone call to looking after clients after settlement and Li says the team also receives in-office training from all their lenders’ BDMs very often on new products, rates and conditions.

Li says their best brokers settle on average $150-180million in loans per year but the minimum for new brokers is $25million.

No slowing down
Zenik lodges an average of $40million loans each week, says Li and by the end of the financial year aim to reach $1.5billion in settlements.

“We have a big vision for the future. We will continue to grow in our new location towards 60, then to 80 people,” says Li.

“Like myself, I do this job already 15 years and I’ve got a 2000 customer base. Every day an existing customer calls me and says (they) want to purchase a new property or introduce a friend to you, so business is quite good.”

Li says he really enjoys broking and it is a good job for the rest of his life, mentioning two brokers that had been in the industry for over 55 years.

“Their whole life is broking,” he says. “I’m really enjoying this job and it’s quite good for me. Everyone is excellent - we’re like a big family and they work very hard.”
