A career snapshot of Bluestone's D'Vaz
Bluestone Mortgages’ national head of sales and marketing Royden D’Vaz found his element by taking a leap of faith and embracing opportunities. Take a look at his career timeline starting from when he entered the industry in 1985.

1985 - BUYS A FRIDGE
Royden D’Vaz started his finance career during his university days, when he made a payment on a fridge at an AVCO financial services office and a manager there asked him if he had considered entering finance. He climbed the AVCO ranks quickly and a year later became a branch manager, managing people much older than himself, then in 1993 he became state sales manager for WA/SA.

1999 - TIME FOR CHANGE
After 14 years at AVCO, D’Vaz changed tack and joined Telstra as an account executive, managing accounts of finance companies in WA. “I wanted to do something totally different and wanted to try other things to see if I liked it.”

“Having that break from finance for the three years really crystallised to me that my passion was always within the finance industry and especially the third party market”

2001 - BUILDS UP BLUESTONE
Three years later he returned to financial services, joining Bluestone in its very early days. He relished the challenge of growing the business, as in 2001 specialist lending was new to the industry and brokers.

2007 - NEW CHALLENGES
Leaving Bluestone’s business in a strong place, D’Vaz joined Challenger, whose mortgage arm was then bought by NAB in 2009. A year later D’Vaz became state manager for WA/SA at NAB Broker. “From a corporate cultural point of view, NAB did teach me a number of disciplines that have contributed to my psyche and ethos which I have right now.”

2014 - BACK TO BLUESTONE
Drawn back by its culture and small family environment, D’Vaz rejoined Bluestone as national manager. He felt it was the right time in his career to, on a national level, build up its sales team, grow the business and re-establish the brand. “I always looked back on this business very fondly. I’ve always said that Bluestone was probably the best role I’ve ever had.”

2017 - STRONG NUMBERS REFLECT SMART STRATEGY
D’Vaz’s passion for building businesses and his well-thought-out strategy are evident in the heights Bluestone has reached today. In March the company announced a 50% increase in volume of the start-up loan product Business Easy in the year from February 2016, and also a doubling of total loan volume growth year-on-year since 2014. But D’Vaz says he wouldn’t be where he is today if he hadn’t bought that fridge back in 1985.

“That’s always been my passion – growing businesses”
