A BDM from Aussie in QLD talks solution seeking even in the strangest situations.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDM’s in the country.

This week, spend a few moments with Aussie’s Brisbane BDM Stuart Sutton; part of the banking industry since his school-leaver days and who has hit his 10th anniversary as a BDM.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
Looking after three distinct channels in our business, Aussie mobile and retail and now also nMB, this can fluctuate from week to week, but every day there is always someone who needs my time. In a ‘standard’ week, I will visit at least 10 Aussie retail stores, as well as spend time with many of our Aussie mobile mortgage brokers in our three State offices in South East Queensland, plus support our nMB brokers.

What do brokers want most from you?
Responsiveness and reliability. Brokers want to know that when they get in touch with me they will get a quick response and can keep their business moving. It’s not about always giving the answer they want, but providing a timely response to allow everyone to operate efficiently.

What is your favourite part of the job?
Finding solutions that keep the broker and the customer happy.

What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
The best brokers have a greater understanding of the business that they work in and use this to service their clients more effectively. These brokers have usually already thought about a solution for their clients and are coming to me to maximise their opportunities.

Describe your ideal weekend.
Exploring somewhere new, somewhere near the coast.

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
I recently had a broker wanting to offer a disused fish farm as security, which had in excess of a dozen ponds on the property. While the house was residential and the intention was to backfill the ponds over time, this wasn’t going to be acceptable security. With some restructuring of their existing debt spread and current properties, we were able to finalise the purchase without it.

How do you like your steak done?
Medium rare over a wood fired grill.
