BDM in the spotlight: Scott Hills

This BDM's strangest scenario probably tops the list so far... "I was asked to finance a floating disco…"

With 20 years in the industry, this HomeStart BDM says a mutual understanding of a broker's business and customers is one of the most important things.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDM’s in the country.

Before entering the industry, HomeStart Finance's Adelaide BDM Scott Hills was studying part time, working in retail during the day and pulling beers in a city pub at night.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
I would see up to 3 brokers a day. I try to devote half of that time meeting new brokers to introduce how HomeStart Finance could help their customers and dedicate the other half to catching up with our existing brokers.

What do brokers want most from you?
Be available to discuss their scenarios (day or night), translate policy, chase up loan approvals and most importantly, have a mutual understanding of their business and their customers.

What is your favourite part of the job?
HomeStart is unique in that we can often fill the gap for customers who wouldn’t be able to secure finance elsewhere, so it’s very rewarding to be able to get these customers into home ownership sooner. I also enjoy forming long term partnerships with our business partners.

What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
The best brokers I deal with show a thorough understanding of complex lending products and solutions with the ability to translate this back to their customers and loan assessors.  A good broker also submits a deal with first time capability.

Describe your ideal weekend
Sleeping in, good coffee, wife and kids, time in the garden, warm weather and cold beer!

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
In a previous role, I was asked to finance a floating disco… I advised my customer no, as the idea would probably go down the gurgler!

How do you like your steak done?
Medium rare with mushroom sauce…..oooooh yeah!
