BDM in the spotlight: Mark Darmanin

This week's Advantedge BDM for Victoria was a landscape gardener before his 16 years in the industry.

Advantedge (PLAN Lending) BDM for Victoria, Mark Darmanin was a landscape gardener before his 16 years in the industry.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDMs in the country.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
Very regularly. I see 10–16 brokers in a week.

What do brokers want most from you?
My time, advice and support. Brokers want me to be contactable and to return calls and emails in a reasonable timeframe, which I am committed to doing.

What is your favourite part of the job?
I really enjoy helping and developing lasting relationships with brokers, who have in many cases become very good friends. I go out of my way to help solve any problem or challenge. Seeing my guidance then convert to someone purchasing a home is a great feeling!

What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
The best brokers know their strengths and then use the support systems around them to help them in the areas where they might have knowledge gaps. For example, often brokers exceed at sales but admin is a challenge. The best brokers are aware of this and delegate by hiring the best possible team they can and letting them do their job.

Describe your ideal weekend
It’s pretty simple. My ideal weekend includes time with family and friends for a few drinks and the Bombers having a win!

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
After 16 years you would think you have come across everything but they just keep coming! The other week I had someone wanting finance to build a house, but they didn’t own the land they were building it on…

How do you like your steak done?
I like it medium, and cooked by someone other than me.

Every Wednesday we’ll feature a different BDM from across Australia. If you’d like to be included, please email the editor.
