eChoice BDM for NSW/ACT, Joshua Cheers has spent five years in the industry after studying IT at the University of Newcastle.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDMs in the country.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
In a regular week I’d see around 15- 20 brokers, which is a combination of existing eChoice brokers and new brokers that want to join the eChoice family.

What do brokers want most from you?
Being responsive! Answering phone calls and responding to emails within a timely manner. Being a BDM 101! My role is to provide them with that critical level of support for their businesses that they need, whenever they need it. The relationship has to be viewed as a true partnership from both sides.

What is your favourite part of the job?
It’s a combination of being in the privileged position to meet awesome people and helping build broker businesses through continued innovation and collaboration.

What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
Brokers with a well-structured, people-centric, progressive approach are the ones defining the future of our industry. These brokers build networks and are not afraid to embrace technology to create efficiencies within their process, so they can spend more time generating new business.

Describe your ideal weekend
I’m a seasonal man. In summer, you’ll find me either at the beach or a rooftop bar having a pint or three with mates. In winter, you’ll find me at home being lazy, watching Netflix and overeating.

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
A broker’s client owned a zoo and wanted to use it as a security.

How do you like your steak done?
Eye fillet, medium rare with a side of crunchy chips - and don’t forget about the sauce! Lots and lots of mushroom sauce.

Every Wednesday we’ll feature a different BDM from across Australia. If you’d like to be included, please email the editor.
