ANZ BDM for NSW, Bruce Pinkerton has been in the industry since he was 18.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDMs in the country.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
10-12 visits per week depending on location & travel times within Sydney. I also have brokers in Rural NSW that I visit at least twice a year.

What do brokers want most from you?
To be accessible, build strong relationships and understand that they are self-employed, therefore need to deal with many other lenders with all their different procedures & policies.

What is your favourite part of the job?
Sounds cliché, but I enjoy getting to know my brokers and understanding their needs – no matter where they are or what their customer base is. I am also well supported by a wider ANZ team to help brokers find a solution for their customer other than just the home loan, such as: ANZ Commercial, ANZ Private Bank, ANZ Branches plus more. Frequently I may get a new scenario on e-mail from a broker and instead of replying via email, I’ll phone the broker so I can better understand the proposal and/or the client, to ensure a quality application is submitted.

What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
They understand and keep in contact with their clients. They also have a good relationship with lenders and their aggregator.

Describe your ideal weekend
Golf on Saturday morning. It’s not an exercise for me, it’s an adventure and I’m exhausted afterwards! Later Saturday afternoon, I recover at home (after successfully dodging chores) and watch the footy or any sport. And Sundays I spend with my children… if they allow me.

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
Helicopter proposal for a very wealthy customer… at the time.

How do you like your steak done?
I don’t have many steaks these days however I always appreciate a quality medium rare with steak Diane sauce.

Every Wednesday we’ll feature a different BDM from across Australia. If you’d like to be included, please email the editor.
